The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the Nigerian Maritime University Bill into law.
NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, hailed the move as historic, noting the bill’s passage comes years after the university was initially proposed as a solution to unrest in the Niger Delta.
Osigwe emphasised the university’s potential to generate employment for residents of the Niger Delta and provide specialized maritime skills to Nigerians.
He stated that the President’s assent is a positive step towards reinforcing peace in the region.
The NBA President urged the people of the Niger Delta to safeguard the institution and ensure it fosters a conducive learning environment for future maritime experts.
He said in a statement on Sunday, “I congratulate the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on his historic assent to the Nigeria Maritime University Bill, several years after the idea of the university was muted as one of the possible solutions to the agitation in the Niger Delta.
“The Nigeria Maritime University will not only create jobs for the people and residents of Niger Delta but will also create opportunities for Nigerians to have specialised skills in the maritime area. The President’s assent is a welcome development towards strengthening the relative peace in the Niger Delta.
“I urge the people of Niger Delta to protect the institution and ensure that it becomes a conducive learning environment for would be maritime experts.”
